In these hills, one can still walk/trek to villages where life is laid back and relaxed. Agricultural practices are still carried on with a pair of bullocks and ploughs. Rice, maize, millet, fresh vegetable of all kinds are major produce of these villages. In the area around Kalimpong and Sikkim, terraced rice fields abound. A visit to these fields during rice planting (July) or harvesting (November) is an experience of a lifetime. Many religious festivals of Hindu, Buddhist, Tibetan and native tribal origin are held throughout the year in which you could take part. Shamanism is still prevalent in these hills and a session with an old practitioner to cure you of your ailments could, actually, do so.
